Paint the Portal was a proposal for large-scale mural installation on the north and south portals of The Battery Street Tunnel, in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood.
Paint the Portal was created to celebrate the historic, structural and cultural significance of the Battery Street Tunnel, in its final years of service. The installation proposed to fully paint the portal fascia at the threshold between tunnel, urban, and natural contexts — to accentuate connections to the surrounding urban landscape of the decommissioned Battery Street Tunnel.
“Paint would give it some pop to call attention to the Battery Street Tunnel and start a more robust conversation about future opportunities for its use — both inside and out”
Paint the Portal was developed in collaboration with Washington Department of Transportation, Seattle Department of Transportation, and Seattle Office of Arts & Culture — Spring 2017.
